  • Why Is Shalela running

    Shalela is originally from Mobile, Alabama where throughout her life she has always aimed to be of service to others whether it was to her family as the oldest of ten, as an officer in the army, a leader in school, captain of sporting teams, or as a leader in my community. Now that she is in the Law School phase of her life she desires to continue the life of service and become a leader in her class. Serving in an elected position will allow her to continue to grow personally and professionally while advocating for her classmates and working with other leaders at the law center.

  • What Shalela hopes to accomplish

    As a class officer, she will focus on unifying the student body and contributing to making the law school experience one that is positive and remembered. She will focus on listening to the needs of her classmates, coming up with solutions, and advocating for the SBA, faculty, and administrators to make the law center the best that it could be.

    If elected to the position she would bring to the position her experience and skills obtained from serving in the United States Army, working in corporate America, and as an organizer in the political realm. The representative is responsible for reporting the concerns of the class and to their respective class president. They are to voice the concerns of their constituents and carry out the duties of the office. Shalela has experience of having led over 100 individuals at one time throughout her professional career. This highlights the communication skills that she possesses that are needed to excel in the representative role. She would greatly appreciate your support and vote in the upcoming election.

ACTIVIST

Shalela is the President of Stand Up Mobile which is a 501(c) Non Profit non-partisan organization that focuses on voter engagement specifically in marginalized communities within Mobile County. The organization has recently focused on educating community members on the importance of voting, and registering voters, along with educating the community on the Redistricting process both locally and on a state level. Shalela recently completed a fellowship that focused on advocacy with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice ( SCSJ ). Currently, she is completing the Black Southern Women's Collaborative x the Foundation for Social Impact Alabama Fellowship. In this fellowship, she is leading and organizing in an institution dedicated to building grassroots capacity around voting rights, with a current campaign plan on election cycles (2022-2023), redistricting, and advancements in voting rights at the legislature.

U.S Army Captain

Shalela Dowdy has served 6 years in the United States Army as an Air Defense Artillery Officer. She has been stationed at Fort Sil, Oklahoma, Fort Bliss, Texas, Shaw Airforce Base, South Carolina, and deployed to Bahrain at Isa Air Base. Shalela is a  Captain in the United States Individual Army Reserves. She is currently a Military Academy Liaison Officer supporting the Directorate of Admissions at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Her duties now include representing West Point Admissions at events and activities within Alabama's First Congressional District throughout each admissions cycle including at college fairs, congressional service academy days, meeting with school officials (teachers, guidance counselors, and various school district leadership), mentoring candidates and parents through the admission and nomination processes, assisting congressional district offices during nomination interview meetings, assisting Admissions diversity program office, and assisting Admissions at USMA on an “as needed” basis.

Delta

Shalela was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority in Spring 2018 through the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter. She is financially active in the organization where serves on many committees and mainly focuses on Social Action.  She is currently the Corresponding Secretary for the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter and runs a social media page called Delta Fierce where she highlights members of Delta Sigma Theta.

Track & Field Coach

Shalela is a Track and Field Coach. She has had the opportunity to coach youth athletes in Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Alabama. While coaching track. She focuses on the development of the children/athlete in the community through teaching, training, and mentoring. She assists the athlete with healthy physical, psychological, and positive social development. Additionally, She is responsible for producing a training plan, supervising the athletes, providing proper instruction, and assisting with preventing injury. Coaching track allows her to positively impact young people in her local communities while also contributing to their growth and development.

Pageant Queen

Shalela started competing in pageants at the age of 25. This particular industry provides her the opportunity to continue to grow professionally and to positively impact her community.
